Prahlad Jani: The man who only eats air
Prahlad Jani

Prahlad Jani (also known as Mataji or Chunriwala Mataji) was an Indian breatharian monk who claimed to have lived without food or water since 1940. He said he was sustained by the Hindu goddess Amba. While his claims drew scientific interest and several investigations were carried out, the results have remained confidential and are generally met with skepticism.

Biography

Born on 13 August 1929 in Charada village, Gujarat, Jani left home at age 7 to live in the jungle. By age 12, he reported a spiritual awakening and became a devotee of Goddess Amba. He adopted the appearance of a female devotee, wearing red garments and floral adornments, and was affectionately called "Mataji" (The Great Mother). Jani believed the goddess nourished him with water through a mystical drop that entered his body via the roof of his mouth. He lived as a hermit in a forest cave in Gujarat from the 1970s until his death on 26 May 2020. He was given samadhi (a spiritual resting place) on 28 May 2020 at his ashram near Ambaji, at Gabbar Hill.
